The disclosure first, as always: we make one of the three products below. Vocalenda is ours. Read accordingly, and in return we'll be straight about Hey Jodie and Clara, both of which are real UK products with published prices and genuine strengths, and about the cases where you should pick them over us.
The short answer: all three answer your salon phone while you groom. Clara starts at £39.99 a month and Hey Jodie at £49, and both send you the caller's details to act on. Vocalenda is £49 a month on the founding rate (standard £69, 500 minutes included) and finishes the job: it books the groom into your calendar mid-call. Pick capture to vet every dog first; pick booking to fill the diary itself.
The 2pm problem
Every groomer knows the moment. You've got a nervous labradoodle on the table, the dryer is going, and the phone starts. You can't answer it, and you shouldn't: the dog on the table is the job. But the caller doesn't know that. A caller who hits voicemail usually just rings the next groomer on the list, because grooming is a next-number trade: nobody waits three days for a callback when the dog is matting now.
So a small industry has appeared to answer that phone for you, and in the last year it has started pitching directly at grooming salons. We compared the three UK options with published pricing, on their own pages, on 1 September 2026. All three market themselves to dog groomers first, but everything below applies just the same if you groom cats too.
The real question: who books it?
Every product in this comparison answers the call. That part is table stakes. The fork, and the thing to actually decide before you compare prices, is what exists when the call ends.
With a capture product, what exists is a summary: name, number, breed, coat, what they wanted. Useful, honest, and better than a missed call. But the booking itself is still yours to make. At 6pm, when the last dog has gone home, there's a list of people to ring back, and some of them booked elsewhere at 2:15pm.
With a booking product, what exists is an appointment: checked against your real availability, written into your calendar, confirmed to the owner by text, all while you kept grooming. There is no list.
Neither answer is wrong. A capture product leaves you in control of every booking, which some groomers genuinely want. A booking product removes the second job. Just don't pay for one thinking you're getting the other.
The three, at a glance
Prices below are each provider's published UK pricing, checked 1 September 2026. One warning before the table: it is not perfectly like-for-like. Jodie publishes unlimited minutes and Clara unlimited answered calls; Vocalenda includes 500 call minutes a month, which is around 250 bookings at a typical two-minute call. Trials differ too.

How much does an AI receptionist for a grooming salon cost?
Between £39.99 and £199 a month for the plans a one-or-two-groomer salon would actually buy, on published UK pricing checked 1 September 2026. Jodie also lists an Enterprise tier from £500 for larger operations.
Hey Jodie runs from £49 a month (Basic) through £99 (Professional) to £199 (Premium), with that Enterprise tier from £500 above them, all with unlimited minutes, no setup fees and no contract, and a 7-day free trial with no card required. Annual billing takes two months off.
Clara is the cheapest way in: £39.99 a month, or £399 a year (which works out at £33.25 a month). Clara Pro is £69.99 a month or £699 a year, and adds live call transfers, automated text follow-ups and team features, with extra seats at £29 a month each. Both plans answer unlimited calls, with a 7-day free trial and no contract or minimum term.
Vocalenda (ours) is one plan: £49 a month on the founding rate for the first ten businesses, £69 standard after that, with a 30-day free trial. The plan includes 500 call minutes a month with no per-call or per-minute charges on top. Full detail on our pricing page.
Hey Jodie, honestly
Jodie is a UK AI answering service with a page squarely aimed at groomers: it asks callers about breed, coat type, size and matting, which is exactly the information you'd want captured. Unlimited minutes at £49 is a genuinely strong headline, and the 7-day no-card trial is as low-friction as trials get.
The thing to be clear-eyed about is the workflow. Jodie's own how-it-works puts it plainly: "Get the summary, call or WhatsApp them back, and book the work." Jodie answers so the call isn't lost; the booking is still your job. If you're a groomer who wants to personally qualify every dog before it gets a slot, that's a feature. If you wanted the diary to fill while you groom, it's a second job wearing a nicer coat.
Pick Jodie if: you take a high volume of long calls (unlimited minutes genuinely matters then), and you want every booking to pass through your hands before it's confirmed.
Clara, honestly
Clara is the value pick, £39.99 a month for unlimited answered calls, with a UK demo number on the site you can ring before trialling, which we respect: it's the same "don't take our word for it" proof we lean on. And Clara has its own dog groomers page too, with properly groomer-shaped capture: breed and size, coat type, whether the dog is a puppy or nervous, and the service they're after. The Pro tier's automated text follow-ups and live transfers are sensible additions at £69.99.
Same clear eyes on the workflow, in Clara's own words: "Clara answers, captures the reason for the call, and sends the details to your mobile", then you "review call details and follow up from your mobile". It's a well-executed capture product. The call-back list still ends up with you.
Pick Clara if: budget is the constraint and £39.99 all-in for unlimited answered calls is the number that works, or you're a solo groomer who actively prefers confirming every appointment personally.
Vocalenda, honestly
Ours, so judge this section hardest. Vocalenda answers the call and completes the booking: it reads your real Google Calendar or Outlook diary, offers times that are actually free, writes the appointment in while the owner is still on the line, and texts them a confirmation from your business number. Reschedules and cancellations work the same way, and only the number that made the booking can change it. Every call lands on your dashboard as a full transcript. When something genuinely needs your eye first, a badly matted coat, an aggressive dog, it takes a message instead of guessing, and it can transfer callers who ask for a person straight to your phone.
Now the trade-offs, because a comparison that hides its own product's limits isn't one. Vocalenda includes 500 minutes a month; Jodie and Clara meter nothing. If your line runs hot enough to exhaust 500 minutes (roughly 250 two-minute calls), our line pauses until the next month while their products keep answering, so a very high-volume salon should do that maths first. Our booking flow also needs your diary to live in Google Calendar or Outlook; if your appointments live only in specialist grooming software or on paper, the capture products fit your workflow as it is today. And £49 is the founding rate for the first ten businesses, not the forever price for everyone: the standard price is £69.
That's our own test line's diary above after a week of calls: every appointment written in by the receptionist while the caller was still on the line, into an ordinary Google calendar. It's the same flow a grooming salon gets.
Pick Vocalenda if: the thing you actually want is the appointment in the diary and the caller confirmed by text, with no call-back list at 6pm. That's the job we built it to finish. There's a fuller picture of it working a grooming day on our pet groomers page.
What about Moneypenny and the human answering services?
There's a fourth category this comparison deliberately leaves out: human and hybrid answering services, where real receptionists (or AI with human fallback) take your calls. They're the right answer for businesses where a mishandled call is expensive and callers often need a person, and the wrong price bracket for most one-and-two-groomer salons. We've covered that market separately in 6 Moneypenny alternatives for UK small businesses and in our explainer on virtual receptionists vs AI receptionists. And if you're shortlisting beyond the grooming-specific products, our seven-provider guide Best AI Receptionist UK and the Fresha AI Concierge comparison go deeper.
Try all three before you decide
Every product here has a free trial, so the honest advice is: use them. Forward your line for a week and count what lands, a list or a diary.
And before any trial, ring a demo line and behave like your most awkward caller. Try to book something, move it, cancel it, ask a question about a matted double coat. Clara publishes a demo number on its site; ours is +44 7888 866273. The demo diary belongs to a barbershop, but the manner, the booking flow and the confirmation text are exactly what your callers would get. If a product's demo can't survive a difficult caller, its trial won't either.
The bottom line
All three products stop the 2pm call from becoming a lost customer, and any of them beats voicemail. Clara is the cheapest capture product at £39.99. Jodie pairs capture with unlimited minutes at £49. Vocalenda, at the same £49 on the founding rate, is the one that finishes the booking: diary written, owner texted, no list.
Decide who books it. The rest is just pricing.
Common questions
How much does an AI receptionist for a dog grooming salon cost?
Between £39.99 and £199 a month for the plans a small salon would buy, on published UK pricing checked 1 September 2026 (Hey Jodie also lists an Enterprise tier from £500). Clara starts at £39.99 a month, Hey Jodie at £49 with unlimited minutes, and Vocalenda is £49 a month on the founding rate (standard £69) with 500 call minutes included. All three have free trials, so the real cost of finding out is nothing.
What is the difference between call answering and appointment booking?
Call answering captures the caller's details and sends you a summary to act on; you still ring back and book the groom yourself. Appointment booking finishes the job during the call: the AI checks your real availability, writes the appointment into your calendar and texts the owner a confirmation while they're still on the line. Both beat voicemail. They are different amounts of work left on your table.
Can I try one before paying?
Yes, and you should. Hey Jodie and Clara both offer 7-day free trials, Vocalenda a 30-day one. Before any trial, ring a demo line and behave like a difficult caller: try to book, move and cancel an appointment, and ask something the AI can't know. Ours is +44 7888 866273; the demo diary belongs to a barbershop, but the manner and booking flow are exactly what your callers would get.
What happens when a caller asks something the AI can't answer?
The right behaviour is a message instead of a guess: a badly matted coat or an anxious dog is your judgement call, not the AI's, and that's exactly what to test on each product's demo or trial. Vocalenda takes a message for anything that genuinely needs your eye, transfers callers who ask for a person straight to your phone, and you can switch it off from the dashboard any time and answer calls yourself.
